SHAH ALAM, May 4 (Bernama) -- Surge protector producer, Transient Resources Sdn Bhd, plans to export the product to neighbouring countries this year, says managing director Ishar Itam.
He said it aimed to sell the protectors in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore to boost sales to between RM2 million and RM3 million.
The company was focusing on the four countries due to similar weather pattern, he told a media conference after the launch of the product under MARSA brand name by International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.
Asked why the company was focusing only in the four countries and not worldwide, Ishar said: "We are familiar with the system being used there."
Transient Resources in collaboration with SIRIM Bhd and Telekom Malaysia Research and Development Sdn Bhd manufactures 16 types of surge protectors not only for power supply in homes but also for telephone and television cables.
Transient Resources' sales rose to RM2.4 million last year from RM942,000 in 2008.
Mukhriz, in his speech, said products such as those developed by Transient Resources should be marketed in countries often hit by thunderstorms like Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines
"Every thunderstorm triggers lightning that can be fatal and damage electrical and electronic equipment," he said.
In tandem with the feverish pace of development in Malaysia, safety measures have become the top priority as the nation moved forward with hi-tech development.
"Though there are imported surge protectors, the quality and durability cannot withstand the impact of lightning strikes and weather conditions in this country.
"Malaysia is one of the countries that experience thunderstorms and lightning strikes throughout the year. In Kuala Lumpur alone, thunderstorms occur between 180 and 300 times a year as compared with Europe only 20 to 30 times a year," he said.
Mukhriz also urged the people to be careful when buying electrical and electronic products.
They should only buy products that have been tested and certified safe by SIRIM Bhd, he added.
